Australia is considered as one of the major producers and exporters when it comes to agricultural products. Similar to other regions with the same climate and weather patterns, Australia possesses regions with low soil fertility. This leads to lower yields compared to other farmlands that have well-nourished soil. What farmers do is cycle planting of crops so that the soil does not run out of nutrition. With the limited space that fertile soil has in the region, farmers also maximize the area by cutting off trees in the middle of planting fields. Droughts and Limited Water Supply

It’s no surprise that the regions of Australia experience drought from time to time. This usually occurs during the summer when the heat is at its peak. What usually happens during a drought is crops quickly wilt and die from dehydration. It is unwise to raise crops and other plants that require a high demand of water in the farming lands of Australia. This would lead to inefficiency in their cultivation and would just be a waste of time, money and hard work in raising them. Add to that the limited water supply in Australia; farmers can’t just use a hefty amount of water in their crops. Raising a farm in those lands needs to be in an efficient manner wherein there’s little waste in resources but still producing a high yield of products.

To fight off these problems, farmers use an irrigation system which delivers a measured amount of water for their crops. This results in a manageable amount of water being used for farmlands and still save the water supply in the process. The crops used in these farms also play an important factor. Instead of using crops that need a lot of water to survive, they raise crops which are easily cultivated and manageable in Australia’s type of environment. Crops like wheat, oats, barley, cotton seeds and sunflowers are raised in the country which is abundantly produced annually.
